Frequently Asked Questions

If you are carrying on a content creation business (producing content regularly with the intention of making a profit), you should register for an ABN. An ABN is free to obtain and is required if you want to register for GST, issue invoices to sponsors, or claim business deductions. It also allows you to quote your ABN to platforms and sponsors to avoid having tax withheld at the top marginal rate. National Accounts handles ABN registration as part of our onboarding process.

You must register for GST when your content creation turnover reaches $75,000 in a 12-month period, or when you expect to exceed that threshold. Once registered, you charge 10% GST on applicable supplies and lodge quarterly BAS returns. Platform income from overseas entities (YouTube, Twitch) is generally GST-free as an export, but domestic sponsorships and brand deals are GST-applicable. National Accounts manages your GST registration and ongoing BAS compliance.

The W-8BEN is an IRS form that reduces US withholding tax on income paid by US entities (YouTube/Google, Twitch/Amazon, Patreon). Without a valid W-8BEN, US platforms withhold 30% of your US-sourced earnings. With a correctly completed form citing Article 12 of the Australia-US tax treaty, the rate drops to 5% for copyright royalties. The form expires every three calendar years and must be renewed. National Accounts reviews and assists with W-8BEN completion, and has published a detailed W-8BEN guide.

If your annual content creation income exceeds approximately $120,000 to $150,000, operating through a company or trust structure can meaningfully reduce your tax. A company pays tax at 25% rather than individual marginal rates of 30% to 45%. A trust allows income to be distributed to lower-income family members. The right structure depends on your income level, personal circumstances, and long-term financial goals. National Accounts models the tax outcome of each structure before making a recommendation.

Yes, to the extent they are used for content creation. If you use your phone 60% for content-related activity (filming, editing, social media management, sponsor communication), you can claim 60% of the cost. Home office deductions can be calculated using the ATO's fixed rate method (67 cents per hour) or the actual cost method. You must keep records to substantiate the work-related proportion. National Accounts sets up expense tracking in Xero to automate this process.

If you have earned income from content creation and not declared it in your tax returns, the ATO may identify the discrepancy through data matching with platforms and payment processors. The best course of action is to make a voluntary disclosure before the ATO contacts you, which can significantly reduce penalties. National Accounts assists creators with voluntary disclosures, amended returns, and ATO negotiations to resolve prior-year non-compliance as efficiently as possible.

If you are a sole trader content creator, you are not legally required to pay yourself superannuation, but it is strongly recommended. Concessional (before-tax) super contributions are tax-deductible and reduce your taxable income. You can contribute up to $30,000 per year (2024-25 cap) and pay only 15% tax on those contributions inside super, compared to your marginal rate outside super. For a creator earning $200,000, maximising super contributions saves approximately $6,000 to $9,000 in tax per year. National Accounts incorporates super planning into every creator's tax strategy.
